The Assembly Story
Things that happened in the past affect how we live today.
From 1969 to 1998, Northern Ireland went through a violent period known as 'The Troubles'. Nationalist and Unionist political leaders and the governments of Ireland and Britain held peace talks to come up with ideas to end the violence.
The peace talks resulted in the Belfast Agreement. This is also known as the Good Friday Agreement because it was signed on Good Friday 1998.
The Good Friday Agreement created a special type of government called power-sharing. This means that Unionists and Nationalists now share the power to make decisions about Northern Ireland.
