Youth Assembly

The Northern Ireland Assembly is going to set up a Youth Assembly, so that young people can have a say in, and make a real difference to, the issues that concern them.

Between March 2010 and March 2011 a group of young people, known as the Youth Panel, worked with the Assembly to produce a plan for a Youth Assembly. They asked questions such as:

  • Who could be a member?
  • How would they choose members?
  • What should a Youth Assembly do?

They did lots of research, went on study visits to other youth assemblies and produced an online survey. They talked to a lot of young people, youth organisations, politicians and others.

In April 2011, they published their proposals. Between 16 May and 15 September 2011 the people of Northern Ireland had the chance to have their say about the plans. This is called a Public Consultation.

The Assembly is currently considering what people said. After consideration, it will publish a report showing how people’s responses have helped shape the final plans for the Youth Assembly.
