Spending Money Wisely

Where does government money come from and who decides how it is spent?

Governments collect taxes to pay for all the public services they provide. They need to plan carefully to make sure that they spend this money wisely. How much should go to schools, hospitals, roads, public transport or sports facilities?

The spending plan is called the Budget. In Northern Ireland, the Executive Committee/Executive of Ministers in charge of the different Government Departments, suggest a budget to the Assembly.  MLAs in committees examine it and then the MLAs debate it in the Assembly Chamber. They might make some changes to the Budget before voting on it. If a majority of MLAs vote yes to the Budget, it is passed and the money will be spent as agreed.

In unpredictable Economic times, there is less money to spend and difficult decisions have to be made. What spending cuts would you make?
