Programme for Government- what’s it all about?

The First and deputy First Minsters published a plan for spending the Budget on 17 November 2011. This plan is known as the Programme for Government (PFG) and shows the detail of how the money in the Budget will be spent up to 2015. It also includes targets and goals for the Ministers to achieve.

The draft PFG can be found at www.northernireland.gov.uk/pfg and before the final version is agreed the Ministers in the Executive would like to know what you would think of it. The details of how you can have your say are at the link above.

Some of the plans in the PFG include:

  • Creating 25,000 new jobs in businesses
  • Developing sports stadiums
  • Building 8,000 affordable homes
  • Imposing a tax on single use carrier bags by 2013
  • Reducing in greenhouse gas emissions
  • Hosting the World Police and Fire Games in 2013
  • Hosting a significant international Golf tournament
  • Encouraging more people to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Improving literacy and numeracy levels among all school leavers
  • Making sure all children have the opportunity to take part in shared education programmes
