UK Supreme Court Debate Days 2018/19 - apply now !

Inspire the next generation of lawyers and give them the opportunity to put their debating skills to the test!

The UK Supreme Court is giving students the chance to debate at the highest court in the land. Applications for the 2018/2019 programme have opened and the closing date for submissions is at midnight on Wednesday, 28 February 2018. They offer ten educational institutions from across the UK the opportunity to take part in a debate day every academic year. In order to be considered for a place on the programme, all you need to do is fill in the application form which can be found on their website and submit it before the deadline. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of March.

Debate day workshops are completely free of charge and aimed at all students in Years 10 – 13 in England and Wales, Years 11–14 in Northern Ireland and S4–S6 in Scotland, but may be of particular interest to those who are currently studying or considering pursuing law or politics at university. The workshop includes a tour of the Supreme Court, a quiz, and a debate prep session with professional lawyers. The students are then given the unique opportunity to debate in one of the Supreme Court's courtrooms followed by a general Q&A session with lawyers.

Students can choose their debate question from a variety of topics, all of which relate to cases previously heard by the Supreme Court. Each debate enables students to not only look at the point of law raised in the case but also gives them an opportunity to debate the wider issue.

This is a great opportunity for students to develop their critical thinking and public speaking skills and to learn about the role of the highest court in the land (including the separation of powers). And it will of course look good on their UCAS forms and CVs too!
