Inquiry into School Councils begins...

The Assembly Education Committee has announced that it will be looking at the issue of school councils. The Committee wants to highlight the good work done by school councils and come up with new ways to support them.

Chair of the Education Committee, Mervyn Storey MLA, believes that school councils are very important because they provide the first opportunity for young people to participate in democracy. The Committee wants to find out how to help schools to run successful school councils that will boost pupils’ confidence and raise awareness about democratic decision making.

Over the next year, the Committee will gather information about school councils. The first step is to send a questionnaire to all schools, and early next year, the Committee hopes to meet teachers and pupils involved in school councils across Northern Ireland.

Look out for the questionnaire from the Committee.  If for any reason you don’t receive one please let the Committee know.

We will keep you informed about the inquiry. Watch this space for more information.
