Give your views on how to improve the operation of the NI Assembly

The Northern Ireland Office is currently seeking views on how to improve the operation of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The consultation highlights four key areas about which there has been debate in recent years in Northern Ireland:

  • The size of the Assembly - how many MLAs should we have?
  • The length of Assembly terms - e.g. should election terms be increased from 4 to 5 years?
  • Multiple mandates - so called “Double Jobbing” e.g. should MLAs also be allowed to work as MPs or sit in the House of Lords?
  • Government and Opposition - would the Assembly work better with an official opposition?

“Hearing the views of as many people as possible will greatly assist the policy formulation process for these important issues. I hope everyone with an interest plays their part and can respond by the 23 October 2012 deadline.”

Rt Hon Owen Paterson MP (Former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland)
