"Schools Questions"

The Northern Ireland Assembly Education Service, in conjunction with BBC Northern Ireland, is hosting a panel discussion which will be broadcast live at 2pm on Friday 31^st May 2013 from the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings.  Why not tune in and be part of the 'virtual audience'?

The Assembly's Procedures Committee has recommended that Ministerial Question Time include time for topical and spontaneous questions to take place during the existing Oral Question Time. The recommendation comes as the Assembly considers the Committee's Report into Topical Questions.

The introduction of a Topical Question Time will be the first time that local Ministers take spontaneous questions from Members on a wide variety of issues--questions on which Ministers have not had specific briefing.

The Education Select Committee in Westminster is conducting an inquiry into School Sports following London 2012 Olympics and the Paralympics, and is keen to gather information from teachers on current policy and provision of school sports and the Olympic legacy.

As part of this Inquiry, the Committee wishes to gain the views of Year 12, 13 and 14 students on the Careers advice they receive.  The aim of the Inquiry is make recommendations to improve careers advice.  A questionnaire can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NKK2TCW.  The survey should take 5-10 minutes to complete. The closing date for the survey is 22 March 2013. 

To be debated today – the Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee’s Report on the Potential of Creative Industries. Recommendations include more effective branding of the creative industries in NI; appointment of creative ‘champions’;  a one stop shop for advice and support; and  better partnerships between government, industry and education sectors. Regarding schools, the report calls for better career advice in this area and an end to pupils having to choose between arts and sciences.

Flag flying, economic recovery and the question of an Assembly opposition were all hot topics today when students from North and South Belfast quizzed their local MLAs on the issues that matter to them.

The Let’s Talk style discussion was organised by the Assembly’s Education Service in conjunction with the Peace and Reconciliation Group which have held a number of similar events in the North West.

More than 60 sixth form students from schools in East and West Belfast got together recently to quiz their local MLAs on the issues affecting them, their schools and their communities. The panel was hosted by seasoned BBC Political Correspondent Martina Purdy and the event itself was held in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Assembly's Education Service and the Peace and Reconciliation Group.

This prestigious event was organised by the British Council and the European Commission Office in Northern Ireland and took place in Parliament Buildings on Friday 19 October 2012.
